He’s 73 and she’s 74. Between this couple, a daughter, a son and his wife, along with three grandchildren, form a small family of eight. This year marks 50 years of marriage for the two who met at the start of their teaching careers at a small segregated school in Spotsylvania County, Va.
It was her parking skills, or lack of, that caught his attention. He asked her to marry him on Valentine’s Day, 1967.
“I went down to Richmond to get that ring—in the snow. I had a Volkswagen. That Volkswagen would go through snow piles, anything,” he said.
She didn’t know she was getting engaged. “It was a surprise,” she said.
Six months later they were married. Two years later, their first child was born, and my life began. Happy Golden Anniversary!
